Wind Energy

At some point, the wind blows everywhere on the planet, some places more than others. I used to live in the pan handle of Nebraska and it's a fairly rare day that the wind does not blow some and most of the time it's blowing at a pretty good clip. Capturing the power of the wind and turning it into electricity is a very elegant way of generating power without emissions of any kind outside of the original manufacture of the wind generator itself.

I read somewhere, that if we were to place wind farms everywhere on the planet that has consistant wind, we would be able to generate 5 times the amount of planet's energy needs per year! The generation of electricity via wind generators has been around for many years, the Jacobs wind generator was the mainstay of rural electrical power back in the 1940's and 50's. Many of these well built wind generators have been rebuilt and are in service today. Today, there are many wind generators manufactured which range in size from 400 watts to several mega-watts.

There is a boom right now in the construction of these mega-watt wind generating farms accross the country. Some complain that these farms ruin the view. To me, they are a wonderful sight to behold! At La Boca Vista, I will be including the installation of a single, Southwest Wind Power, 400 watt wind generator in my solar system. I am not certain just how much this will contribute in electrical generation because I really don't have any data about how much or often the wind blows at this location. But, when you think about it, very often, the wind will be blowing when the sun isn't shining, i.e.; on overcast and stormy days. So, it is definitely worth a try, and if it proves to add substantially to my electric generation, I will add other wind generators to my system.
